My Advice for Revamping Your Health This Spring

One of the biggest questions I get as a fitness professional is about nutrition. Everyone wants to know the secret sauce to eating healthy and getting a body they love. It's a hard question to answer! It's hard to answer for a few different reasons.

First, as a fitness person I need to be careful about the boundaries of my scope of practice. I am only allowed to say what the government says is healthy and I think they lie to us. (Don't worry this isn't a conspiracy theory blog! HAHAHA.)

Second, everyone's body is different and what works for me, might not work for you, your body or your lifestyle.

Third, even the doctors don't know! There is so much information out there, and a ton of it is contradictory that it's hard to know who to believe and what to do about it. The worst part is all the Netflix documentaries that scare you out of eating absolutely everything! What are we to do?!

So, the one piece of advice I'm never scared to give...

Eat as close to the ground as possible!

If you can eat as close to the real living full plant as possible, you know you are eating healthy. If its wrapped in plastic, boxed up, pre-prepared, or can live on a shelf for 2 years without going bad, it doesn't really belong in your body.

The problem is this is how we live now. Me included! I have had to learn to cook and in learning to cook I am reminded over and over why I grew up on the pasta sauce in a jar, meals of cut up meat and cheese in a box, and cereal covered in sugar... BECAUSE IT WAS EASY!

My poor mom and dad didn't have 2 hours to sit around making fresh pasta with the sauce every night. Frozen fish sticks and mac and cheese from the blue box were delicious delights at my house. As adults we continue the trends we grew up with.

Knowing that part of the challenge then, for the person looking to create a life they are excited about in a healthy, happy body means changing your relationship to easy. It means changing your relationship to what you are willing to do to your body and deciding if you really want to do what it takes to have what you want. It also means starting to listen and watch for how different foods effect you.

I have had many a client come to me wanting 6 pack abs. It is totally doable but it is a lifestyle choice. If you think about it, you are a result of the lifestyle choices you have made up to this moment. You are the body you have created and so if you want something different, you must begin to create something different from this moment on.

That doesn't mean you can't live your life with joy and deliciousness, but it does mean you need to choose powerfully what you want. Powerfully choosing cake every night might make your taste buds happy in the moment, but know the result is a cake body.

Long story short in creating a life you are excited about in a body you love, is to eat as close to natural, whole, fresh foods as you can and powerfully choose when you don't. Pay close attention to how you feel and you'll be addicted to a life of health especially once you notice what the other feels like!
